Get on top of your teaching with the Daily Lesson Sheet

Plan Your Teaching Day

When you have a busy day full of piano teaching ahead of you, it’s important to make sure you stay on top of the basics. To start with, you need to know who’s going to be attending lessons, whether that’s at your own studio, in your home, in schools or other venues.

While keeping a weekly, monthly or termly register is helpful and important for your records, I like to track my lessons and pupils on a daily basis. The evening before, or sometimes on the morning, I use my Daily Lesson Sheet to list which pupils I’m going to see. By doing this daily, I can better make use of any gaps in my schedule if someone isn’t going to be able to attend due to illness or other reasons. It also helps me to make quick plans for the day and stay engaged with the work I have to do. If I’m trying to remember everything in my head, I very quickly find myself in a muddle!

After lessons, I then have a record of who I taught, who wasn’t in attendance that day and any very brief notes I made about the content of the lesson, things to remember, scheduling notes for the following session and so on.

How to use the Daily Lesson Sheet

It’s very easy to use the Productive Piano Teacher Daily Lesson Sheet! Download your free copy below and save it in a place where you can regularly open it and print off copies for the week. 

• Write the date
• Write the location you’re teaching in – e.g. school, studio, home, pupil’s home
• Write the times of your lessons in the left hand column
• Fill in the name column and use the notes to remind yourself that a pupil needs sheet music, to practice a particular technique, or any other quick reminders.

Sometimes I use highlighter pens to mark up my sheet too so get creative if that helps you stay organised.

File your completed Daily Lesson Sheet so you can check back at the end of the week for any extra work you need to do, based on your notes. You can also keep these sheets to help you when you’re completing invoices, checking payments or shopping for sheet music and resources.

Keep things simple while teaching the piano

By using the Daily Lesson Sheet you can keep on top of all the things you need to remember while preparing and teaching your lessons for the day. If you can only fill out one sheet, make it this one. It contains all the basic information you need, and you can use it to build your organisation system into something that works for you.
